Development and Validation of a Competency-Based Program of Education and Assessment of the Fundamentals of Micro Surgery (FMS).

Proposal Abstract

There is a growing societal demand to document competency in surgical practice. Competency-based training relies on an outcome-driven curriculum that is responsive to changes in surgical practice. Microsurgery is a highly specialized discipline that requires unique skill-sets, technology, instruments and surgical approaches. Despite such specialization, a standardized program of education, skills training and evaluation is lacking. The current proposal adopts the principles and methodology of the highly successful Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery(FLS) program as a foundation for the development of a similar initiative in microsurgery–Fundamentals of Micro Surgery(FMS). The current initiative seeks to a) validate a framework for a novel competency-based curriculum for the teaching and assessment of microsurgical skill and 2) establish meaningful standards of surgical practice to ensure safer and more effective healthcare delivery. The results of this study offer the potential for evidence-based standard setting and feedback to surgeons. Discovery and investment in education, standard-setting and quality benchmarks related to minimally invasive surgery would ultimately foster innovation in ambulatory surgical care.

The current initiative seeks to a) validate the framework for a novel competency-based curriculum for the teaching and assessment of microsurgical skill and 2) establish meaningful standards of surgical practice to ensure safer and more effective healthcare delivery. The results of this study offer the potential for evidence-based standard setting and feedback to practitioners of microsurgery. Lessons learned from this research can be directly applied to improve the quality of future generations of surgeons within Canada and globally. Discovery and investment in education, standard-setting and quality benchmarks related to minimally invasive surgery would ultimately foster innovation in ambulatory surgical care – a recognized priority of Women’s College Hospital.
