Proposal Abstract

Co-morbid depression and anxiety forms one of the commonest clinical conditions in psychiatry and poses a challenge to treat the symptoms of anxiety, as they do not respond as well to antidepressant medications compared to depressive symptoms. dTMS is the treatment of both depression and depression with anxiety with the least amount of side-effects across the entire spectrum of treatment modalities for this co-morbidity. The side-effects to dTMS are almost none, giving it the greatest advantage compared to other treatments. We like to find out which symptoms respond quicker and better with dTMS when we use this for depression with anxiety. This will pave the way to customize the dTMS treatment to patients with co-morbid depression and anxiety. Our limited clinical experience with dTMS suggests that anxiety responds later compared to depression, but it responds in a much better way compared to medication only leading to full remission of the (anxiety) symptoms. This research will give us better understanding of which patients are better candidates for dTMS. Further research in future will throw more light on maintenance dTMS to keep patients well over months and years.
