The Baycrest Advanced Geriatric Life Support (BAGLS) Program has been developed to improve future family physician's skills in dealing with acute, sub-acute, chronic, and palliative geriatric issues in settings without on-site labs or imaging. The BAGLS program is an innovative program with an enhanced approach to interdisciplinary care for practicing physicians; and an excellent potential to improve health care delivery in the elderly. BAGLS was initially designed, based on a focused needs assessment to meeting the determined learning needs of Family Medicine Residents in caring for the elderly. The BAGLS program involves a written reference "Survival Manual" and Scenario Based Training Course with clinical scenarios tailored to this necessity. The program has undergone extensive evaluation through pre- and post BAGLS program surveys and focus groups with data analysis. Results of our study revealed that both knowledge and confidence in management of 26 common geriatric presentations (spanning acute, sub-acute, chronic, and palliative presentations) were significantly improved. We have presented the results of our study and held workshops at conferences including Family Medicine Forum and Canadian Geriatrics Society.
