Rapid detection of the wide range of viruses and bacteria that cause respiratory infection in children is important for both clinical management and infection prevention. We successfully designed and evaluated a room-temperature stable, semi-automated real-time PCR respiratory panel for 24 viral and bacterial agents. A disease-causing virus or bacteria was detected in 83.6% samples with our panel, compared to a detection rate of 59.1% with standard methods. The PCR panel was significantly more sensitive than standard methods (p <0.001). We believe many laboratories will be interested in using our method since there are a number of advantages over currently available methods. Results are ready in 90 minutes, the test is easy to use can be performed with minimal training and tests for new infectious agents can readily be added to the panel in response to outbreaks
