AREA OF RESEARCH

Dr. Brooks’ academic focus is cardiovascular emergencies, with special interest in cardiac arrest and resuscitation. He conducts studies on innovative technologies and strategies designed to increase bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation and improve access to early defibrillation. Dr. Brooks is a member of the Resuscitation Advisory Committee of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Immediate Past Chair of the Science Subcommittee within the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee. He has been involved in the development of international emergency cardiovascular care guidelines for the last 20 years.

MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE AND/OR HEALTH CARE DELIVERY

Dr. Brooks has authored 113 peer-reviewed articles which have been cited 11,196 times with an h-index of 50. Dr. Brooks is a globally recognized expert in public access defibrillation and bystander resuscitation in cardiac arrest. He is the PI for a CIHR-funded RCT measuring the impact of the PulsePoint Mobile App Device. He designed and implemented a novel community volunteer responder program in the Kingston area in 2023, the first of its kind in Canada. Dr. Brooks is the Chief Medical Officer for Rapid Response Revival which is an AED manufacturer which has invented the world’s first single-use automated external defibrillator. He is assisting the company with commercialization of this technology which aims to address several well-recognized barriers to public access defibrillation.
