MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE AND/OR HEALTH CARE DELIVER

Dr. Ibrahim is leading a major randomized controlled trial comparing two electrode positions and the use of manual pressure for electrical cardioversion, a procedure whereby the heart is shocked back into normal rhythm for atrial fibrillation. This is an incredibly common procedure and the cornerstone of rhythm maintenance. Effective electrical cardioversion benefits patients and reduces health care admissions, which has the potential to dramatically reduce massive costs associated with atrial fibrillation care. He also previously published a systematic review and meta analysis establishing the optimal single oral dose methods for restoring normal heart rhythm from atrial fibrillation. This review established the optimal pharmacologic regimen for single oral dose cardioversion, which is cheap, easy and effective, and saves the health care system considerable resources expended for sedation and rhythm-control procedures. He has also published on the monitoring yield of implantable loop recorders, and his research has been cited in papers of major cardiovascular international society.
