AREA OF RESEARCH

Dr Murji has a research focus on minimally invasive gynecologic conditions with a keen interest in surgical outcomes, clinical effectiveness, patient safety, and improving healthcare systems. Specifically, his expertise is in fibroids, endometriosis, and conditions that intersect obstetrics and gynecology, including cesarean scar defects and placenta accreta spectrum. In addition, he is the author of numerous Clinical Practice Guidelines that are cited extensively and have had a profound impact on promoting best practices in gynecology. Since January 2014, his research program at the University of Toronto, has garnered substantial recognition with international awards, and has received over $1.5-million CAD. He has >115 peer-reviewed publications, with considerable impact (H-index 23).

MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE AND/OR HEALTH CARE DELIVERY

Drs. Shirreff and Murji co-founded the Surgical Gynaecology Scorecard, a national program providing hysterectomy metrics, biannually over 5 years, to >120 surgeons at 10 hospitals, encouraging individual and hospital-level reflection. Our wealth of data with >5000 hysterectomies in our RedCAP database, resulted in a robust research and knowledge translation program from which our novel Hysterectomy Complication Prediction Tool emerged. In 2022, we introduced the Gynaecology Quality Improvement Collaboration (www.GYNQI.com), a community of practice assisting gynaecologists and patients in care delivery with >65 patient handouts, 3 patient portals and dissemination of several successful quality improvement projects within our network. Our site has >2000 monthly worldwide users.
