AREA OF RESEARCH
Dr. Daniel McIsaac is a scientist with expertise in clinical trials, health services research and knowledge translation focused on helping high risk Ontarians achieve optimal outcomes from surgery.
As lead of the AIMS research team, Dr. McIsaac is currently focused on how:
- Prehabilitation to prepare patients for surgery in a manner that will result in improved functional recovery, reuced complications and lower resource use
- Strategies to incorporate prehabilitation into routine care in Ontario, including through virtual delivery
- Optimization of care for older adults with frailty preparing for surgery with a focus on long-term recovery
Evaluation of current health system processes and policies that could be leveraged to improve patient outcomes and health system sustainability
MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE AND/OR HEALTH CARE DELIVERY
- Currently leading the largest randomized trial of prehabilitation in Canada
- Foundational work on establishing the epidemiology of frailty in older surgical patients
- Identification and operationalization of optimal tools for preoperative frailty assessment
- Development, evaluation and operation of a virtual frailty assessment training module used by over 15,000 international users and integration of this module into standard clinical triaing in 6 jurisdictions
Development of optimal adherence strategies for patients undergoing prehabilitation
