Dr. Glen Geiger

Dr. Geiger has Engineering degrees from both the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto, as well as a Medical Degree from McGill University.  He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in the specialty of Internal Medicine and has an Executive MBA from the Telfer School of Business at the University of Ottawa.  He has an extensive background in Clinical Information Systems, at both Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, and more recently at the Ottawa Hospital.

Dr. Geiger has been in medical practice for over thirty years and is currently a staff physician and Assistant Professor at the Ottawa Hospital.  He spends the bulk of his practice time on the Internal Medicine Clinical Teaching Units at the General Campus.

In his spare time, Dr. Geiger is the Chief Medical Information Officer of the Ottawa Hospital.  In this capacity, he is the physician lead for Project Fusion, an Ottawa regional initiative to link six separate health care organizations comprising: primary care, community hospitals, specialized cardiac care and tertiary hospital care.  Project Fusion went live with Epic’s Comprehensive Medical Record on June 1st, 2019.  The new clinical workflows delivered during this implementation have included:

  • Real-time electronic clinical documentation for all inpatient, outpatient, and ED visits
  • Full integration of speech recognition technology with online documentation tools
  • Mobile Electronic Medical Record functionality on smart phones and tablets
  • Integration of electronic vital signs equipment for direct upload of patient vital signs
  • Immediate upload of ECGs from mobile carts
  • Electronic Medication Prescribing across all care settings, including real-time drug-allergy and drug-drug interaction checking
  • Electronic Nursing Care Plans across all care settings, updated in real time
  • Mobile Handheld Devices in support of Bedside Nursing workflows
  • Patient Bar-code wristband scanning for positive patient identification during:
  • Medication Administration
  • Blood Product Administration
  • Bottled Breast Milk feeding
  • Phlebotomy
  • Point-of-care Glucose testing
  • Electronic Treatment Plans for Dialysis and Chemotherapy
  • Electronic inpatient Consultation orders and Electronic ambulatory care referrals
  • All patients leaving the hospital, its clinics or its emergency Department, receive an After Visit Summary, in their language of choice, summarizing the next steps in their treatment plan and viewable online in their MyChart
