AREA OF RESEARCH
I am a Scientist in Clinical Epidemiology, as well as a HepatoPancreatoBiliary (HPB) and Acute Care surgeon at the Ottawa Hospital. My program of research has two principal components:
1) Clinical trials: I have designed, funded, and led multiple trials in perioperative medicine and surgical oncology, in addition to being the Ottawa PI for several other international trials.
2) Minimization of blood transfusions in surgery: The focus of my work has been to 1) minimizing the odds of requiring a clinically-indicated blood transfusion, and 2) minimize or eliminate unwarranted transfusions in surgery. The latter objective has led us to generate important data on transfusion decision-making in the operating room, as well as on transfusion appropriateness.
