AREA OF RESEARCH

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder that affects more than 20 million people worldwide. About 50% of patients with schizophrenia are non-adherent to medical treatment, which increases the likelihood of negative clinical outcomes. One of the main predictors of treatment adherence is illness awareness. Impaired illness awareness remains difficult to address clincially. Our research focuses on applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a novel, safe and affordable method of non-invasive brain stimulation, combined with neural biomarkers identified by multimodal neuroimaging techniques, to improve illness awareness and treatment adherence in schizophrenia.
