AREA OF RESEARCH

Family medicine health services research in antibiotic prescribing in primary care, its impact on the evolving antibiotic resistant infection pandemic, and interventions to reduce unnecessary antibiotic in community settings in order to reduce antibiotic resistance.

MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE AND/OR HEALTH CARE DELIVERY

The development and validation of a practical clinical decision aid for the optimal detection and treatment of strep throat infections in children and adults, an approach that has been adopted nationally and in other countries. Similar decision aids for the optimal management of urinary tract infections and the optimal use of expensive bone mineral density testing have also been developed.

Earlier work included the demonstration of limitations in approaches to managing lipids with medication that contributed to the modern and now internationally used multi-factorial approach to identifying higher cardiovascular risk groups most likely to benefit from drug treatment.
